Cyclone Shakti and Post-Monsoon Trekking Advisory
-
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Maharashtra due to Cyclone Shakti. Trekking plans in the aforementioned districts should be postponed until the weather clears. Trekkers are urged to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and adhere to any advisories issued by local authorities.
This year's monsoon season highlighted the inherent risks of trekking in the Sahyadris. In a major incident, over 300 trekkers were rescued from Malshej Ghat after being stranded due to a sudden rise in water levels. The season also witnessed fatalities, including a trekker's death at Rajgad Fort in June and another at Siddhagad Fort, also in June, due to falls on slippery terrain. These incidents underscore the importance of being well-prepared, carrying appropriate gear, and respecting the unpredictable nature of the mountains.
General safety advisories for the post-monsoon season include:
Check the weather: Avoid trekking during heavy rains, thunderstorms, or cyclone alerts.
Trek in groups: It is always advisable to trek with a group and an experienced guide.
Inform someone: Keep your family or friends informed about your trekking plans and expected return time.
Carry essential gear: This includes a first-aid kit, a good pair of trekking shoes with proper grip, a raincoat, extra layers of clothing, a torch, and sufficient food and water.
Be cautious on trails: Post-monsoon trails can be slippery and prone to landslides. Stick to marked paths and avoid taking shortcuts.
